Urban Woot How to have a joyful life in the city
In 2013, I founded UrbanWoot, the UK’s first-ever Happiness on the High Street pop-up shop a playful and powerful experiment in reimagining what our public spaces are really for.

Set in a Meanwhile Space, UrbanWoot transformed an empty retail shell into a collaborative wellbeing space. It was never about selling, it was about connecting, co-creating, and inviting people to imagine better ways of being together.
UrbanWoot was run as an autonomous collective a living, evolving collaboration with artists, facilitators, neighbours and curious passers-by.
Over 16 months, we co-produced:
- Supper nights and conversational salons where strangers became communities
- Participatory art, pop-up experiences and everyday moments of magic
- Wellbeing workshops & 1-2-1 sessions
- Children’s workshops making cloth characters and art
What began as an empty shop became a home for ideas, laughter, reflection, and connection for people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.
Urban Woot taught me that places are people, placemaking isn’t something we do to a space it’s something we do with the people already there. That principle still shapes all of my work today whether I’m supporting social services, developers, organisations, or local communities to build places that feel alive, welcoming, and worth belonging to.
